С возникновением интереса к поведению женщин-заключенных было выявлено, что их поступки всегда оценивались тюремным персоналом «с мужской точки зрения» и который находил их более «трудными» в наблюдении лишь потому, что женщины задают больше вопросов, чаще обращаются к начальству, стремятся объяснить свое поведение и оспаривают решения [34]. В результате последующих исследований было установлено, что женщины представляют собой «трудный контингент» вследствие значительного уровня распространенности среди них психических расстройств и поведенческих нарушений, в том числе и как последствий перенесенного физического и сексуального насилия [5; 17; 23; 25]. В результате было выявлено: 14 % неуточненных психотических расстройств у женщин и 7 % у мужчин, 63 % неврозов у женщин и 40 % у мужчин, 39% алкогольной зависимости у женщин и 63 % у мужчин. При рассмотрении различий в распространенности психических расстройств у заключенных Канады было выявлено, что у женщин в три раза чаще развивается депрессия, чаще встречаются шизофрения и нарушения пищевого поведения. Отмечалось, что у женщин, злоупотребляющих алкоголем, практически всегда имеется сопутствующее психическое расстройство, гораздо чаще наблюдается стигматизация вследствие злоупотребления психоактивными веществами, а соматические последствия синдрома зависимости куда более серьезны по сравнению с таковыми у мужчин.
