Боли в области позвоночника относятся к числу наиболее распространенных клинических нарушений. Боли в позвоночнике принято подразделять на острые и хронические. Повторные эпизоды в течение ближайшего года возникают у 20-44% больных, а в общей сложности рецидивы наблюдаются в 85% случаев. Зачастую болевой синдром не прекращается полностью, и у больных периодически возникают обострения хронических БНЧС. В целом примерно 80% населения развитых стран на протяжении жизни отмечает эпизоды таких болей [21].
