The aim of the article is to specify the essence of the concept of the artistic and image thinking and to develop the methods of forming artistic and image thinking of pupils of different age in the process of vocal and choral work. Generalizing scientific researches about the essence of the key concepts, the authors offer the following definition: artistic and image thinking is a complex emotional and intellectual process of cognition and assessment of artworks, which has the synthetical character and includes both analytical and emotionally-expressive elements. The developed methods of forming pupils’ artistic and image thinking is based on the principles of individually-differentiated approach, general artistic and image orientation of education, the unity of technical and artistic. The authors also distinguish and substantiate pedagogical conditions, on which the developed methods are based: 1) provision of the diversity of the artistic and image content of song repertoire, 2) activation of the artistic and image attitude of pupils towards the songs performed by them, 3) activation of pupils’ artistic and creative work.
