AMERICAN IDEAL OF THE SELF-MADE MAN By George Hasko Abstract This study is intended to review the philosophical and religious origins of the ideal of success and to trace its historical formation from Puritans to yuppies. The idea of self-made man evoked by the American Dream of the unlimited vertical mobility, strengthened by the frontier experience and the thought of self-reliance has survived. Its apostles have shaped its image from the rugged individualist of the wilderness to the organization man of our more and more bureaucratic twentieth century society. The stories of the famous self-made men have verified the social ideals in each epoch of the American history. This thesis outlines the mutual relationship of the ideas of success, individualism, republican thought, and lifestyles.
